What a Certificate of Analysis actually proves (and what it doesn't)
A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is the single most useful document when you're buying research peptides — but it's widely misunderstood. It's neither a rubber stamp of "good" nor a marketing badge. It's a lab report about one specific production lot, and knowing exactly what it can and can't tell you is what separates an informed buyer from a hopeful one.
What a CoA does prove
Purity, by HPLC. High-performance liquid chromatography separates the contents of a sample and measures how much of it is the target peptide, expressed as a percentage. A figure like 99.1% means the analysed material was overwhelmingly the intended compound rather than truncated sequences, salts, or by-products. For research-grade material, high-90s is the expectation.
Identity, by mass spectrometry. Purity tells you how much of something is present; it doesn't tell you what it is. Mass spec confirms the molecular weight matches the intended peptide — evidence the vial actually contains the sequence on the label, not a cheaper look-alike.
Batch match. A CoA is only meaningful if its lot number matches the vial in your hand. The whole point of a per-lot certificate is that it describes your material, not a representative sample from months ago. A batch code that resolves to its own CoA is what makes the document verifiable rather than decorative.
What a CoA does not prove
That every vial is identical. A CoA reflects the sample tested from a lot. Good manufacturing and handling make the lot consistent, but the certificate is evidence about the batch, not a guarantee about each individual vial.
Sterility or suitability for any particular use. Some CoAs include endotoxin or sterility results; many don't. Even when present, those results describe the material as tested — they don't make a research reagent suitable for anything beyond laboratory, in-vitro research use.
Anything about human use. This matters most of all. A CoA is a chemistry document. It says nothing about safety, dosing, or fitness for human or veterinary use — because research peptides are not for those purposes. A clean CoA and "safe to use" are completely different claims, and only the first is something a certificate can support.
How to use a CoA in practice
Read it in this order: confirm the lot number matches your vial, check the HPLC purity figure, confirm mass-spec identity, then note the test date and any endotoxin/sterility results. If a seller can't produce a batch-specific CoA at all, treat any purity claim as unverified — in a market where quality varies enormously, the document is how you check rather than hope.
